What Happens When Someone Takes the Catalytic Converter?

Hopefully, you will never experience catalytic converter theft. The reason why people take catalytic converters is that they are made from precious metals. Large trucks are common targets because the converters are bigger or they have a dual-converter system. This being said, anyone can become the victim of catalytic converter theft. Here’s what happens when someone takes the converter.

The Engine Is Extremely Loud

You won’t know that something is wrong until you fire up the engine. Once you do, you will be surprised by the noise the engine makes. When the catalytic converter has been taken, the engine gets extremely loud. It will roar even louder if you press your foot down on the accelerator.

The Check Engine Light Turns On

You will also notice that the check engine light has turned on and won’t turn off. Usually, the light turns on for a brief moment when you start your automobile, and then it turns off. In this case, the exhaust system is malfunctioning without the converter so the check engine light will remain on.

The Acceleration Jerks Violently

Attempting to drive your automobile without the converter can be extremely frustrating and distressing. For example, when you press down on the accelerator, your automobile will jerk violently forward. It will continue to lurch each time you press down on the accelerator.

The Engine Sputters at Slow Speeds

The engine will also sputter and struggle to produce power when you are driving slowly. The engine does a better job of producing power when you pick up speed, but this will not smooth out your vehicle’s acceleration. These performance problems are one reason why you shouldn’t drive your automobile. Let’s talk about the most important reason, however.

You Can Smell Exhaust Inside the Car

Your exhaust system is designed to trap the exhaust until it is released out of the tailpipe. Once the catalytic converter is missing, the exhaust is released into the air. Consequently, your vehicle’s ventilation system can pick up the exhaust and below it through the vents. In addition, the exhaust can flow through open windows. As such, you may inhale dangerous exhaust fumes if you drive your automobile.

Don’t take chances, as these fumes are deadly. Rather, have your automobile towed to our shop after you have spoken with the authorities and your insurance company to report the theft. We will assess the damage to your exhaust system and give you a detailed estimate for the repairs and a new converter.
